Comparing Customizing Entries Against Another SAP HR Client or System

The transaction code to use to undertake this function is SCMP.

The tool serves to compare customizing tables and views. The comparison and its result are at field level. The comparison client is always considered a "foreign" environment, therefore you must access it via a remote function call (RFC). The Info button in the selection window for the RFC destination offers more information on how to use an RFC call.

Normally, the tool is called out of the standard table maintenance (transaction SM30) function Compare, in the Utilities menu. When you are in the maintenance mode, you can do both the adjustment and the compare. In the adjustment mode you can select entries and then transfer data for the selected entries into the current table. You can also delete them from this table. You can select single entries, a block of entries, or all entries at once. The entries transferred or deleted during adjustment are returned to SM30. Only then are they checked and saved to the database.

Use the Adjust button to initiate the transfer. You will then see a detail screen that shows you the maximum information that is available for each line. You can scroll between the lines you had selected earlier. You can transfer values of a view/table from the comparison client/system for:

  • the entire line
  • a specific field that you select with the cursor
  • an entire column.

This function is for copying data from the comparison system into new columns which you added to the table but that still contain initial values. This function will only add values, it will not replace any existing ones. It affects the complete column, that is, all entries in that column.

The results are shown in table form. You can, however use the Settings (menu) and Filter (push button) functions to do some limited configurations, such as the column header (column width). You can also limit the display to those entries that differ from each other, or suppress columns that are not relevant.

In the comparison display, the view entries of the remote view (comparison system/client) are shown underneath those of the local view (logon system/client). This makes it easy for you to see any differences. See the legend for the comparison status.

The Statistics button offers you useful quantitative statistics (see the legend for details).

Additional Ways to Call the Comparison Tool

Access to the tool is also possible for such tables that cannot be maintained with SM30. The transaction SCMP offers you the same comparison function, however without the option of copying and saving entries from the comparison system/client. That function is limited to transaction SM30 which ensures consistency by going through additional logical validations.

You can also compare non-customizing tables, as long as they are suitable with regard to their structure and size. Be aware that the usability of the tool is limited, due to its generic nature. The objects must be table-like objects of reasonable size and number of fields. You should also be able to recognize the contents of the compacted form generated by the tool, that means the layout of the display should be chosen accordingly.
