i would like to elaborate as following -
Base unit of measure - is the basis for inventory management and evaluation.
Alternative unit of measure - such as order unit, issue unit, wm unit - are defined to identify packages and containers. These are for smaller units measuring purpose eg. cartons, boxes, bottles, barrels, pallets etc.
as for eg. lets say base unit of measure is pc. Lets say Alternative unit of measure is carton for issue, order or sales purpose.
Further alternative unit of measure for WM purpose is box or palletization.
Note that alternative units of measure is always converted to base unit of measure. Since the MM system uses base unit of measure for calculation, the WM application requires that a conversion be defined for any alternative unit of measure that has been assigned for the material.
while creating a material lets say base unit of measure is pc and alternative unit of measure is box. System will ask through a window for conversion factor.
So in your sales order use sales unit and conversion will be automatically done.

Can anyone help me with the concept/ usage of Alternative UoM. I know that alternative unit of measure is maintained in material master in additional data. but i am unable to comprehend its usage.
Our requirement is for a material A having base UoM as kg is sold in a carton. Now material A is packed in bags of 5kg and then 10 of these bags are packed in a carton with total weight of 50kg.
What we want to understand is that in a sale order if we book 100kg of material A, system should automatically convert the qty and unit to 2 cartons
