Recent versions of the SAP GUI have this option which contains a raft of useful options which can be turned on or off to make the system more efficient for you, the user. Different users will prefer to have the settings set in different ways. The key point is that if you know what effect the settings have then you can decide which ones are useful to modify to suit your own needs.
You can access these settings from any standard SAP screen. Just click on the colourful graphical image - found on the top right hand side of the standard SAP menu.
The first choice in the menu should be the “options” button. Click on this and you will be taken to the options dialogue box (see image below) which contains the different settings on a number of different tabs.
Click on the different tabs to access the appropriate options.
Tab: Options
Quick InfoIt is always useful to get some information about a button or icon, before you click it. Hover over the icon and you will get back some information about the button’s function quite quickly if you have the option set to “quick”.
You can set the option to “slow” but there is not much benefit as you have to wait a while for the tip to appear. Setting the option to “none” will ensure that no quick info is displayed.
We suggest that you set this option to “quick” unless you don’t wish any info to appear on your screen and temporarily hide some of the other icons.
The checkbox called “on keyboard focus change” presumably produces quick information based on using the keyboard. Not sure if this option is used by many users.
MessagesTick the different checkboxes if you would like the messages to appear in the middle of your SAP session as a dialogue box on the screen rather than on the bottom left hand side of the screen as a one line item. This is often useful for beginners learning to enter data on SAP. Getting a dialogue box on your screen can’t be missed, whereas if the messages appear as one liners on the bottom left hand side of the screen, users can often miss these.
Tab: Cursor
Cursor Position
“Automatic tabbing at end of field” – this is quite useful in that it tabs to the next field once you get to the end of the allowable entered characters for the previous field. If field A is expecting 8 characters or digits to be entered, the cursor automatically tabs to field B once you enter a value for the 8th character entry in field A. It is worth having this tick set to “on” for this setting.
“Note cursor position in field at tabbing”
On - places the cursor exactly where you were when you last left an input field
Off - places the cursor at the beginning of the input field
This setting is really down to personal preferences.
“Position Cursor to End of Text “
On - places the cursor at the end of a text in an input field when you click to the right of the text
Off - places the cursor exactly where you click
Our recommendation is that it is better to have the tick set to “on”, but again, it is down to personal preferences.
“Select text in edit field in insert mode”
On - selects and highlights the text when you tab to an input field. The session must be in insert mode. Any input in this field will clear the field.
Off - When you tab to the next field the text is not highlighted. The cursor appears at the end of any text already in the field.
Cursor Width
Set the cursor to narrow or wide depending on your preferences. The wide cursor is a lot easier to see but can partially obscure parts of the digits on either side of the cursor.
Others
“cursors in lists” - this option is used in cases where fields are output in a report list.
On - clicking on the field highlights and selects the whole field.
Off - clicking on the field will place the cursor where you have clicked and does not select the contents of the whole field.
Tab: Local Data
History
Off - no input history is available.
On - input history is available. Your input will be stored in the database locally. A list of previously entered data is shown when you start typing in the field. Clicking on a particular letter will ensure that filtering for that letter takes place. Use the space bar to see all entries.
Immediately - the history list will be shown immediately for the field with the focus before input is made.
Expire time - specifies, when entries are considered obsolete and will no longer be shown.
“Maximum permitted file size” - this is the maximum file size of the database stored locally for history items. This size must be greater than 0, because otherwise no history will be available.
“Maximum number of entries” - specifies how many values per input field should be stored. You can set this to between 1 and 20 as allowable values.
“Clear history” - clicking on this button will ensure that all history items will be deleted. This is across all of your SAP systems.
“Maximum cache size” - specifies the maximum total size of all cache files.
“Maximum cache file size” - specifies the maximum size of one cache file.
This is the directory to store the input history and the cache files. The directory must exist and you must be able to write to it.
The history files like SAPLocalData.mdb and SAPLocalData.ldb will be stored direct under this directory.
The cache files will be stored under its subdirectories SAP_Cache_/Cache1, SAP_Cache_/Cache2 etc.
Front end Security
Notify on change - having this flag set to “on” will ensure that the user is always notified whenever a file is to be downloaded. This is a useful message generally, but can be annoying if you have a number of file downloads taking place.
Tab: I18N
Internationalization
This will only be used by customers wishing to make use of multi-byte functionalities. For the setting to take effect, you need to re log onto SAP.
Tab: Expert
Controls“show all keys in dropdown lists” – very useful for showing the object key for a particular object in Org Management or PD.
“sort items by key” – useful if you are more familiar with the object keys, rather than the object names.
Checked: Dialog Box for OK-Code enabled.
Unchecked: No Dialog Box for OK-Code.
Checked: If a string, which is copied, is pasted into a field and the string is longer than the visible part of the field then the end of the string, which no longer fits into the field, is pasted into the next field.
Unchecked: Even if a string is copied, it is pasted not only into the first field, but also in the part which you are unable to see.
Tab: Trace
The trace settings are fairly self explanatory. Choose the appropriate mode and the pertinent part of the system.
Tick the box “detailed output” if you would like to see detailed information.
If you activate the checkbox “Show window” you see the generated text in a separate window. However, this has an adverse effect on performance.
Tab: Scripting
The installation message will tell you whether scripting has been installed.
If you are recording and running things such as CATT procedures, you may well have to have the checkboxes for scripting enabled.
