After doing some tests, the findings are as follows:
In an MMR (material master record), for a combination of sales organization and distribution channel, if field "Base unit of Measure" = KG
I.e. in MMR only KG is maintained
1. In VA01, in a sales order, at item level, in field "Un", press F4, ONLY those units maintained for that material (for sales org and distribution channel) in MMR shall be shown. (or possible in sales order).
Thus with F4, ONLY option would be KG (no other options shall be possible /prompted by the system)
2. In MMR, if in field "Sales unit" G is maintained. When user clicks on Save, popup shall be prompted for conversion.
e.g. 1000G = 1KG
3. With step 2, in VA01, Un automatically would be G.
4. This Un = G, can be manually changed to KG.
As ONLY options set in MMR are KG and G
5. Pricing shall change accordingly and automatically.
If in VK11, unit = KG
5000EUR for 1KG
In VA01, for a sales order:
5a. Sales order has 1 KG, pricing = 5000EUR
5b. for the same sales order, item level changed to 5G, pricing shall automatically change to 25EUR

Can anyone help me with the concept/ usage of Alternative UoM. I know that alternative unit of measure is maintained in material master in additional data. but i am unable to comprehend its usage.
Our requirement is for a material A having base UoM as kg is sold in a carton. Now material A is packed in bags of 5kg and then 10 of these bags are packed in a carton with total weight of 50kg.
What we want to understand is that in a sale order if we book 100kg of material A, system should automatically convert the qty and unit to 2 cartons
